2026 Will Probably Be My Final Year in Football — Ronaldo
Cristiano Ronaldo has hinted that 2026 could mark the end of his remarkable 25-year professional football career.
Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed that 2026 will “probably” be his final year as a professional footballer, bringing his extraordinary career closer to its expected conclusion.
The 41-year-old Portuguese forward made the disclosure in an interview with Vogue magazine published on Sunday, saying he intends to leave behind a “spectacular legacy” when he eventually retires from the sport.
“This is probably my last year of football, and I want to leave a spectacular legacy,” Ronaldo said, adding that his plans for life after football were already “all mapped out.”
Ronaldo has spent more than two decades at the highest level of the game and has established himself as one of football’s most decorated and prolific players. He has scored more than 950 goals for club and country while representing Sporting Lisbon, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus and Al Nassr.
The Portugal captain had previously suggested that retirement was approaching, saying at different times that he could stop playing “soon” or within “one or two years.” His latest comments, however, represent one of his clearest indications yet that his playing career could end before 2027.
Ronaldo said he was already considering how to fill the gap football would leave in his life. He mentioned travel and padel among the activities he enjoys and said he would need several interests to remain occupied after retirement.
“Because football could leave a big hole, you have to fill your time in various ways, not just one,” he said.
Ronaldo also reflected on the sacrifices that have accompanied his career. He said he wanted to enjoy the rewards he and his family had earned after 25 years of dedication to professional football.
The forward recently married his longtime partner, Georgina Rodriguez, in an intimate ceremony in the Portuguese resort of Cascais.
Despite his comments about retirement, Ronaldo remains focused on football for now. He recently represented Portugal at the 2026 World Cup before linking up with Al Nassr ahead of the new Saudi Pro League season.
His potential retirement would mark the end of one of the most remarkable eras in modern football, following a career defined by goals, individual awards, major trophies and sustained excellence at the highest level.
