2026 U-20 WWC: Falconets Fall 2-0 To Spain In Group F Opener
Nigeria’s Falconets suffer defeat to Spain in their opening Group F match at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.
Nigeria’s Falconets began their 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup campaign on a disappointing note after losing 2-0 to Spain in their Group F opener on Monday.
The match was played at the Arena Sosnowiec in Poland, with Spain controlling large portions of the encounter and making the most of their opportunities.
The defeat leaves Nigeria needing positive results from their remaining group matches against China and New Caledonia if they are to progress to the knockout stage.
Spain, the 2022 champions, showed their technical quality and experience throughout the contest, making it difficult for the Falconets to establish sustained control of the game.
Nigeria struggled to create enough clear-cut opportunities and were unable to find the breakthrough as Spain maintained pressure and defended effectively.
The European side eventually opened the scoring through Marisa, who put Spain ahead before Laia Cerrato added the second goal to give her team a comfortable advantage.
The Falconets tried to respond but could not find a way back into the contest as Spain protected their lead until the final whistle.
The result is a setback for head coach Moses Aduku, whose team had entered the tournament with ambitions of winning Nigeria’s first FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup title.
Nigeria have twice finished as runners-up at the competition, in 2010 and 2014, losing to Germany on both occasions. They have also qualified for every edition of the tournament since its inception.
Despite the defeat, the Falconets still have two opportunities to revive their campaign. They will face China on Thursday, September 10, before concluding their Group F fixtures against New Caledonia on Sunday, September 13.
The top two teams in each group, along with the four best third-placed teams, will advance to the Round of 16.
Aduku’s side must now quickly regroup and improve their attacking efficiency and defensive organisation ahead of the crucial encounter with China.
A strong response in their next match will be essential if Nigeria are to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stages alive
