Troops of the Nigerian Army have dismantled a major camp linked to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN) in Imo State, recovering suspected remains of two military personnel killed four years ago.
The operation, conducted on Friday, April 24, 2026, took place along the Ubaha-Orsu axis in Orsu Local Government Area as part of ongoing clearance efforts targeting criminal hideouts in the South-East.
According to military sources, troops of the 82 Division, supported by other security agencies, acted on credible intelligence to raid the suspected stronghold. During the operation, they encountered heavy resistance and came under intense gunfire but successfully repelled multiple ambushes, forcing the attackers to flee.
A subsequent search of the area led to the discovery of shallow graves within the camp. Troops carefully excavated the site and recovered human remains believed to belong to Master Warrant Officer Linus Musa Audu and Private Gloria Mathew.
The two personnel were reportedly abducted and killed in May 2022 while travelling for their traditional wedding, an incident that drew widespread condemnation at the time.
The Army confirmed that the recovered remains have been secured and will undergo forensic examinations, including DNA testing, to establish their identities conclusively. It added that efforts are underway in collaboration with the families to ensure proper identification and arrange dignified burials with full military honours.
Military authorities described the discovery as further evidence of atrocities committed by the group, noting that it underscores ongoing efforts to dismantle insurgent networks and restore stability in the region.
The Army reiterated its commitment to pursuing justice for fallen personnel and sustaining operations until all criminal elements are neutralised. It also commended residents for providing timely intelligence and urged continued cooperation to support security operations.
The remains are currently in safe custody pending the outcome of forensic analysis.
