Supporters of Muhammadu Ali Ndume in Southern Borno Senatorial District have raised N38.5 million to fund his expression of interest and nomination forms ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The fundraising effort, led by youth groups from the nine local government areas in the district, took place on Saturday in Maiduguri, Borno State. The initiative drew about 2,000 participants, including youth representatives and community associations, who contributed funds on the spot.

Speaking at the event, the youth coordinator, Alhaji Babandi Shehu, described Ndume as a courageous leader known for speaking truth to power and holding the executive accountable. He said the donation reflects the confidence constituents have in the senator’s leadership and continued relevance in national politics.

“At this stage of Nigeria’s political development, the country needs leaders who can boldly check excesses and defend democratic values,” Shehu stated, adding that the contributions were aimed at ensuring Ndume’s return to the Senate.

Ndume, who has represented Southern Borno in the National Assembly since 2011, is seeking a fifth term in office. His aide, Junaid Jibril Maiva, said the senator’s track record in legislative and constituency development informed the decision by supporters to back his bid.

According to Maiva, Ndume has sponsored over 70 bills and played key roles in the establishment of major institutions, including the Nigerian Army University in Biu and the North East Development Commission. He also cited projects such as housing for internally displaced persons in Gwoza and Damboa as part of the senator’s achievements.

Breakdown of the donations showed contributions from various local government areas and groups, including transport unions and traders’ associations, demonstrating broad-based grassroots support.

Supporters said the fundraising initiative was necessary to sustain continuity in representation and ensure that the district retains an experienced voice in the Senate.

The development highlights early political mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections, as key actors begin positioning and consolidating support across constituencies.
