Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force in Edo State have rescued a 70-year-old farmer, Pa Jonah Owobu, who was abducted while returning from his farm, successfully foiling a N30 million ransom demand.

The victim, a resident of Uwalo Oke in Uromi, was kidnapped on April 20, 2026, after failing to return home. His wife reported the incident the following morning, informing authorities that the kidnappers had contacted the family and demanded N30 million for his release.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, swift action was taken following the report. The Divisional Police Officer in Amedokhian mobilised a joint rescue team comprising police operatives, military personnel, local hunters, and members of the Edo State Security Corps to launch an immediate search operation.

During the operation, security personnel discovered the victim’s abandoned motorcycle and personal belongings along a forest trail, which provided critical leads. The team advanced into the bush and eventually located the kidnappers’ hideout.

On sighting the approaching operatives, the suspects fled into the forest, abandoning the victim. Owobu was rescued unharmed and has since been reunited with his family.

Authorities confirmed that a manhunt is ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects, with intensive bush combing operations currently underway.

Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Monday Agbonika, commended the joint security team for their prompt and coordinated response. He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to tackling kidnapping and other criminal activities across the state.

The police also assured residents of sustained security operations and urged the public to remain vigilant and provide credible information that could assist in tracking down criminal elements.

The command reiterated that investigations are ongoing and expressed confidence that the perpetrators will be arrested and brought to justice.
