U.S. President Donald Trump was escorted to safety after gunshots disrupted a high-profile media gala in Washington on Saturday night, triggering panic among guests.
The incident occurred during the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner, held at the Washington Hilton Hotel, where hundreds of journalists, officials, and dignitaries had gathered. Reports indicate that the suspect was apprehended near a security screening area outside the main ballroom.
Security operatives, including the United States Secret Service, quickly moved to evacuate the president from the stage as chaos unfolded inside the venue. Guests were seen taking cover under tables while armed tactical teams secured the area.
In a statement shared on social media, Trump praised security agencies for their swift response, confirming that the suspect had been taken into custody. He added that he would address the public shortly at the White House.
“The First Lady, the Vice President, and all Cabinet members are safe,” Trump said, while noting that law enforcement had advised an immediate evacuation of the premises.
Authorities confirmed that the shooting took place near the event’s main entry checkpoint, not inside the ballroom itself. However, the disruption led to heightened tension, with police units surrounding the hotel and helicopters hovering overhead.
The dinner, often referred to as the “Nerd Prom,” is a major annual gathering of journalists and political figures. Organised by the White House Correspondents’ Association, the event raises funds for scholarships and celebrates press freedom.
Despite initial plans to proceed, organisers later announced the postponement of the event following the security breach.
The venue holds historical significance, as it was the site of the 1981 assassination attempt on former U.S. President Ronald Reagan.
The incident adds to ongoing concerns about presidential security, following previous threats against Trump during campaign and public appearances.
