The 2027 governorship ambition of Obafemi Hamzat has received a significant boost as key stakeholders within the All Progressives Congress (APC) declared their support for his bid to succeed incumbent Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Among those who endorsed Hamzat are former Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, and Senator Tokunbo Abiru, who represents Lagos East Senatorial District.
The endorsements were made during separate visits by Hamzat to their residences as part of his ongoing consultations with party leaders and stakeholders ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking during the visits, Hamzat emphasised the importance of engaging party members and building consensus, noting that consultations remain a key aspect of democratic practice within the APC.
“Consultations are part of the democratic process. It is important to carry everyone along in decision-making,” he said.
In his response, Abiru described Hamzat’s approach as consistent with the APC’s culture of unity and discipline, expressing confidence in his leadership capacity. He assured the aspirant of his full backing.
Similarly, Edun commended the consultation efforts, describing them as a reflection of grassroots democracy. He endorsed Hamzat, citing his experience and competence to lead Africa’s largest city economy.
Edun also urged the aspirant to prioritise poverty reduction and sustained economic growth if elected, while commending the economic reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Also present during the visits was former minister Musiliu Obanikoro, who praised Edun’s longstanding contributions to the party.
Another stakeholder, Julius Solomon, described Hamzat as a qualified candidate, pointing to his experience in governance and loyalty to the APC.
The endorsements signal growing support for Hamzat within party ranks as the race for Lagos 2027 begins to take shape.
