The Rivers State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the assault on Port Harcourt-based journalist, Allwell Ene, who was attacked by suspected hoodlums while on duty.
The incident occurred around Garrison Junction in Port Harcourt, where Ene—an employee of Megaletrics, operators of Classic FM, Beat FM, and Naija FM—had reportedly gone to investigate alleged criminal activities in the area.
According to the journalist, he was confronted by over 17 individuals who questioned his presence. Despite identifying himself as a reporter, he said the attackers proceeded to assault him physically. He sustained injuries, particularly around the eyes, while his clothes were torn. His mobile phone, cash, and other personal belongings were also taken during the attack.
Ene later confirmed that he met with the State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, who assured him that the matter was under active investigation. He was also issued a medical examination form as part of the process.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Blessing Agabe, confirmed that authorities have launched a probe and are working to identify and apprehend those responsible.
Reacting to the incident, the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Rivers State Council, strongly condemned the attack, describing it as unjustifiable and a violation of press freedom.
In a statement signed by the State Chairman, Paul Bazia, and Secretary, Ijeoma Tubosia, the union expressed concern over what it called a growing pattern of hostility toward journalists.
The NUJ stated that such acts undermine the role of the media in society, stressing that journalists should be regarded as partners in nation-building rather than targets of violence.
Describing the attack as unacceptable in a civilised society, the union called on the government and security agencies to ensure that the perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice
