Commercial activities were suspended at Agbalata International Market in Badagry, Lagos, on Thursday as burial rites commenced for the late Akran of Badagry, Aholu Menu-Toyi I.
The respected traditional ruler, who passed away on January 12, is being honoured through a 10-day state-backed burial programme organised by the Lagos State Government.
The Secretary to the State Government, Mrs Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, had earlier announced that the ceremonies would run from April 23 to May 6, as part of efforts by the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to give the monarch a befitting farewell.
Ahead of the rites, a town crier moved across Badagry communities, including markets and residential quarters, announcing the commencement of traditional activities and directing the temporary closure of the Agbalata market.
Observations showed that shops and stalls remained shut throughout the day, leaving the usually busy commercial hub largely deserted.
Chief Tunde Giro, the Depegan of Badagry, explained that the closure was limited to specific traditional rites and assured that the market would reopen promptly.
“The market will only close during special rites, considering its importance to Badagry and beyond,” he said.
However, some traders expressed frustration over the development, noting that they were not adequately informed before arriving at the market.
A fish trader, Joseph Edwin, who travelled from Mile 12, said he encountered the closure upon arrival and called for wider dissemination of such announcements through radio and television to reach more people.
Meanwhile, burial activities have begun at the palace, featuring traditional performances such as the Ajogan dance, which is being staged across Badagry’s eight quarters.
Religious prayers are also being offered by Christian, Muslim, and traditional worshippers as the community continues to honour the late monarch’s legacy.
The ceremonies are expected to attract dignitaries and cultural stakeholders as Badagry pays tribute to one of its most revered traditional leaders.
