Former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar, has commended Nigerian military personnel for the successful rescue of abducted passengers, including candidates of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), in Benue State.

In a statement shared on his X account on Sunday, Atiku praised troops of Operation Whirl Stroke for what he described as their courage, professionalism, and commitment to protecting civilians.

He noted that the rescue operation along the Makurdi–Otukpo road was particularly significant as it secured the release of young students who were travelling to sit for their examinations.

“The gallant troops of Operation Whirl Stroke have once again demonstrated courage, professionalism, and an unyielding commitment to the protection of innocent Nigerians,” he said.

Atiku specifically applauded the military for ensuring the safe return of the abducted passengers, stressing that the timely intervention helped preserve the future of the affected UTME candidates.

He added that the sacrifice and vigilance of security personnel continue to inspire hope among Nigerians, especially at a time of heightened insecurity in parts of the country.

While celebrating the successful rescue, the former Vice-President also used the opportunity to call for sustained reforms in the security sector. He urged authorities to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture to ensure safer travel conditions for citizens across the country.

Atiku further emphasised the importance of better support, funding, and equipment for security agencies, noting that their effectiveness is crucial to national stability and public confidence.

“Nigeria must work and it will work when we support and equip those who stand daily in defence of our people,” he stated.

The rescue has been widely welcomed as a positive development amid ongoing concerns over kidnappings and attacks on major highways in parts of Nigeria.
