World Athletics Spotlights Ezechukwu, Oyibu Ahead of World U-20 Championships

World Athletics has identified Nigeria’s Miracle Ezechukwu and Success Oyibu among the athletes to watch in the women’s 200 metres at the 2026 World Under-20 Championships, scheduled to hold from August 5 to 9 in Oregon, United States.

The global athletics governing body highlighted the Nigerian duo following their outstanding performances this season, placing them among the top contenders for medals in the sprint event.

Ezechukwu heads to Oregon as the reigning Nigerian women’s 200m champion with a personal best of 22.77 seconds, making her one of Africa’s strongest prospects.

The 17-year-old enjoyed an impressive 2025 campaign, winning double gold medals in the 100m and 200m at the African U-18/U-20 Championships, where she led a Nigerian sweep of the girls’ 200m final.

She also represented Nigeria at the recently concluded 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, reaching the semi-finals of the women’s 100m and helping Nigeria qualify for the final of the women’s 4x100m relay.

Speaking after her Commonwealth Games outing, Ezechukwu expressed confidence ahead of the World U-20 Championships.

“I think I’m good to go. It’s just going now, rest, focus and talk to God. My biggest target this year was this Commonwealth and World Junior. When I’m done here, I’m moving to World Junior, and I believe and trust that I’m going to win something over there,” she said.

Her compatriot, Oyibu, has also enjoyed an impressive season, recording a personal best of 22.90 seconds while competing for Baylor University in the United States.

The sprinter also excelled at the 2025 African U-18/U-20 Championships in Abeokuta, where she won the women’s U-20 200m title in a then personal best of 23.56 seconds.

Earlier in the competition, Oyibu secured silver in the women’s U-20 100m before anchoring Nigeria’s U-20 women’s 4x100m relay team to gold alongside Lucy Nwankwo, Anita Enaruna and Chioma Nweke.

According to the official World Athletics entry list, Nigeria will compete at the championships with a team of 15 athletes, comprising 10 women and five men, as the country seeks another successful outing on the global junior athletics stage.
