Why Barcelona Ruled Out Move for Osimhen

Barcelona have decided against pursuing a move for Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen this summer after concluding that the financial demands required to complete the transfer are beyond the club’s current plans.

The Spanish champions had monitored the Nigerian international in recent weeks as they searched for a long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski, who departed the club at the end of the 2025/26 season to join Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire.

Despite recognising Osimhen’s goalscoring quality, Barcelona reportedly concluded that a deal would place excessive pressure on the club’s finances.

According to reports, the 27-year-old currently earns around €15 million net per season, excluding bonuses and image rights, and is unwilling to reduce his salary expectations.

Barcelona, who continue to operate under financial restrictions, are reportedly unwilling to alter their wage structure to accommodate such a package.

In addition to his salary, Galatasaray are said to value the striker at approximately €75 million, making the total cost of the transfer significantly higher than the club is prepared to commit.

Beyond financial considerations, Barcelona are also believed to have assessed other aspects of the potential deal, including concerns over dressing-room harmony, ultimately deciding that the risks outweighed the benefits.

Osimhen remains one of Europe’s most prolific forwards, having scored 76 goals in 133 appearances for Napoli before completing his move to Galatasaray.

Since arriving in Turkey, he has continued his impressive form, registering 59 goals in 74 matches across all competitions.

While Barcelona have ended their interest, the Nigerian striker continues to attract attention from other European clubs.

Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly among the leading contenders for his signature after submitting an opening offer of around €60 million, which Galatasaray rejected.

The London club are expected to return with an improved proposal as they continue their search for a proven goalscorer ahead of the new season.

Although Barcelona admire Osimhen’s ability and goalscoring record, the club has decided that the overall financial commitment required to complete the transfer does not align with its current economic strategy, effectively ending any prospect of the Nigerian joining the Catalan side during the current transfer window.
