WAFU B U-20 Championship: Flying Eagles Beat Côte d’Ivoire on Penalties, Reach Final

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles secured a place in the final of the WAFU B U-20 Championship after defeating hosts Côte d’Ivoire 4-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout following a thrilling 2-2 draw after extra time.

Goalkeeper Lawani Clinton emerged as the hero of the encounter, producing two crucial saves during the shootout to send Nigeria into the tournament’s final despite the home side’s spirited performance.

Playing before their home supporters, Côte d’Ivoire started brightly and dominated the early stages of the semi-final. Their attacking pressure paid off in the 18th minute when they broke the deadlock, giving the hosts a deserved advantage.

The Flying Eagles struggled to find their rhythm for much of the first half but returned from the break with renewed determination. Their persistence eventually paid off in the 68th minute when captain Habila Simeon rose highest to head home the equaliser.

The goal was significant as it became the first conceded by Côte d’Ivoire throughout the competition, underlining Nigeria’s resilience against one of the tournament’s strongest sides.

With both teams unable to find a winner in regulation time, the contest moved into extra time.

Nigeria seized the initiative during the additional period when Abubakar Aliyu found the back of the net in the first half of extra time, putting the Flying Eagles ahead for the first time in the match.

Just when it appeared Nigeria had done enough to secure victory, the hosts struck in stoppage time of extra time to restore parity and force the game into a penalty shootout.

The tension intensified from the spot as both sides battled for a place in the final. Nigeria suffered an early setback when captain Simeon missed the team’s second penalty.

However, Clinton responded with outstanding composure, saving two Ivorian penalties to swing the momentum back in Nigeria’s favour.

The Flying Eagles converted the remainder of their kicks to complete a 4-3 shootout victory, sealing their place in the championship final.

The victory keeps Nigeria’s hopes of lifting the regional title alive and highlights the team’s fighting spirit, overcoming both the home crowd and late disappointment to earn a deserved place in the final.
