WAFCON: Two Super Falcons Stars Suspended for Crucial Egypt Clash

The Super Falcons of Nigeria will be without two key players for their final Group C match against Egypt at the ongoing 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after the Confederation of African Football imposed suspensions on the duo.

Defender Oluwatosin Demehin and midfielder Jennifer Echegini will both sit out the crucial encounter following disciplinary actions arising from Nigeria’s hard-fought 1-0 victory over Zambia on Saturday.

Demehin received a straight red card in the 40th minute after bringing down Zambia captain Barbra Banda, who had broken through on goal and appeared set to score.

The dismissal forced Nigeria to play with 10 players for more than half of the match as the Super Falcons battled to protect their slim lead.

Echegini, on the other hand, was booked during the contest, earning her second yellow card of the tournament.

Under CAF’s disciplinary regulations, accumulating two yellow cards automatically results in a one-match suspension, ruling the midfielder out of the decisive fixture against Egypt.

The suspensions come at a critical stage of the competition, with Nigeria still fighting to secure a place in the quarter-finals after an inconsistent start to their campaign.

The Super Falcons suffered a surprise 3-2 defeat to Malawi in their opening Group C fixture, leaving their title defence under immediate pressure.

However, they responded with a determined performance against Zambia, claiming a valuable 1-0 victory despite playing with 10 women for most of the match.

Veteran striker Asisat Oshoala scored the game’s only goal in the eighth minute, giving Nigeria an early advantage before the team produced a disciplined defensive display to frustrate the Copper Queens.

Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie and the Nigerian defence withstood sustained pressure from Zambia to preserve the narrow lead until the final whistle.

The victory revived Nigeria’s hopes of progressing to the knockout stage and kept their quest for a record-extending 10th WAFCON title alive.

With one round of matches remaining, Malawi lead Group C with six points, while Nigeria and Zambia have three points each. Egypt remain without a point after two matches.

Nigeria must now face Egypt without Demehin and Echegini, knowing that another positive result could secure qualification for the quarter-finals depending on the outcome of the other group fixture.
