WAFCON 2026: Ordega Blames Super Falcons’ Exit on Poor Preparation

Francisca Ordega says inadequate preparation contributed to Nigeria’s historic WAFCON quarter-final exit against Cameroon.

Super Falcons forward Francisca Ordega has blamed inadequate preparation for Nigeria’s early exit from the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Nigeria failed to reach the semi-finals for the first time in the history of the competition after losing 1-0 to Cameroon in the quarter-finals.

The Super Falcons endured a difficult start to the tournament, suffering a 3-2 defeat to debutants Malawi before recovering with victories over Zambia and Malawi.

Despite their improved performances in the group stage, Justine Madugu’s side were eliminated by Cameroon following a closely contested quarter-final encounter.

Ordega said the team’s preparation before the tournament was not sufficient, stressing that competing for the continental title and World Cup qualification required thorough planning.

Speaking to ESPN, she was asked whether the team’s preparation had been adequate.

“Of course not. I think it’s something we really need to talk about,” Ordega said.

She added that teams competing in the tournament were all targeting qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, making adequate preparation essential.

“If you’re coming for a World Cup competition or qualification, you have to prepare because everyone is coming here with the World Cup as everyone’s target,” she said.

The defeat to Cameroon means Nigeria must now go through the African play-offs for another opportunity to qualify for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
