US Plans $1bn Security Aid Package for Colombia

The United States has announced plans to work with Congress to approve a $1bn assistance package for Colombia, as the country's new right-wing President, Abdelardo de la Espriella, begins his administration.

US State Department officials said the proposed package would form part of a renewed partnership with Colombia, supporting de la Espriella's administration in pursuing shared security goals.

The planned assistance is expected to strengthen cooperation between both countries, with Washington describing the package as a cornerstone of its renewed relationship with Bogotá.

The announcement comes as Colombia begins a new political chapter under de la Espriella, with the US signalling its intention to deepen security cooperation with the new administration.

The package still requires congressional approval before it can be formally implemented.
