U20 AFCON Qualifiers: Flying Eagles Fall 2-0 to Burkina Faso, Reach Semi-Finals

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles suffered a 2-0 defeat to Burkina Faso in their final Group B match on Sunday but still qualified for the semi-finals of the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship as runners-up.

The defeat ended Nigeria’s unbeaten start to the tournament after victories over Ghana and Togo, but their earlier results ensured they progressed to the last four with six points from three matches.

The Flying Eagles had opened their campaign with an impressive 4-2 victory against rivals Ghana before recording a convincing 3-0 win over Togo to strengthen their qualification hopes.

Burkina Faso, however, produced a disciplined display to secure all three points and finish top of Group B with seven points from three matches.

The Young Stallions took the lead in the 23rd minute when Alassana Bagayogo rose highest to head home from a corner kick, giving Burkina Faso the early advantage.

They doubled their lead 13 minutes later through Mohamed Zongo, who curled a stunning free-kick from about 30 yards beyond the reach of the Nigerian goalkeeper to leave the Flying Eagles with a mountain to climb.

Nigeria attempted to respond after the restart, enjoying more possession and pushing forward in search of goals, but struggled to create clear-cut opportunities against a well-organised Burkina Faso defence.

Despite several attacking substitutions and increased pressure in the closing stages, the Flying Eagles failed to find a breakthrough as Burkina Faso comfortably protected their lead until the final whistle.

Elsewhere in the group, Ghana and Togo played out a goalless draw, leaving the Black Satellites in third place with two points, while Togo finished bottom of the standings with one point.

The outcome means Burkina Faso will face Niger in one of the tournament’s semi-final fixtures.

Nigeria will now take on hosts Côte d’Ivoire in the second semi-final as they continue their quest to retain the regional title.

Beyond a place in the final, the semi-finals carry additional significance as the two finalists will qualify for the 2027 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations, which is scheduled to be hosted by Ghana.

The Flying Eagles will now shift their focus to the knockout stage, where victory against the hosts will secure another appearance in the continental championship and keep their title defence alive.
