Trevoh Chalobah Drafted into England's World Cup Squad After Tino Livramento Suffers Calf Injury
England defender Tino Livramento has been ruled out of the 2026 World Cup after sustaining a calf injury in training, prompting an emergency call-up for Chelsea's Trevoh Chalobah ahead of the Three Lions' opening group stage match against Croatia.
England's FIFA World Cup 2026™ campaign has been dealt a major defensive blow just hours before their opening match, with fullback Tino Livramento officially ruled out of the entire tournament due to injury. In response, Thomas Tuchel’s side has invoked FIFA's emergency pre-tournament replacement regulations to draft Chelsea center-back Trevoh Chalobah into the final 26-player squad.
Livramento, the 23-year-old Newcastle United defender known for his versatility on either flank, sustained a severe calf injury during a team training session on Sunday afternoon. A subsequent MRI scan and comprehensive medical assessment conducted on Monday confirmed that he would play no further part in the competition. The structural setback comes as a cruel twist for Livramento, who had missed the final two months of the club season with a thigh injury but had fought back to feature in a recent pre-tournament warm-up match against New Zealand.
Under rigid FIFA regulations, participating nations are permitted to replace a seriously injured or ill outfield player up to 24 hours prior to their official opening match kickoff. While the core England squad has departed for Dallas, Texas, to confront Croatia on Wednesday, Chalobah will fly directly from London to England's primary basecamp in Kansas City to begin integrating into the tactical setup.
The 26-year-old Chelsea defender, who was a reliable structural pillar for his club side throughout the 2025/26 campaign, currently holds one senior international cap for England. While Chalobah will not be physically available for the opening match against Croatia, team management expects him to be fully match-ready when England travels to Boston to face Ghana on June 23, followed by their final Group L clash against Panama in New York New Jersey.
