Transfer: Monga Explains Why He Rejected Arsenal for Manchester City

Jeremy Monga says Manchester City’s winning culture and player pathway convinced him to reject Arsenal’s transfer approach.

Teenage winger Jeremy Monga has revealed that Manchester City’s proven pathway for young players and consistent success were the key reasons he rejected a move to Arsenal in favour of joining the Premier League champions.

The 17-year-old completed a summer transfer from League One side Leicester City to Manchester City in a deal reportedly worth £10 million, with an additional £2.5 million in performance-related add-ons. He has signed a long-term contract that will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until 2031.

Monga, who became the third-youngest player to feature in a Premier League match, admitted that Arsenal made a serious attempt to secure his signature before City completed the deal.

Speaking about the transfer, the young forward said Arsenal came very close to signing him, but Manchester City ultimately offered the ideal environment for his development.

According to him, the opportunity to progress through City’s renowned youth system and compete for major honours made the decision straightforward.

“Arsenal’s interest was very strong because it was very close to me going there, very close,” Monga said.

He explained that City’s reputation for developing talented youngsters and their recent dominance in English football heavily influenced his choice.

“The main decision was probably the pathway and the club itself,” he added.

“They’ve been so successful that it was a no-brainer when City call. It’s every child’s dream to win trophies and be at the top with the best.”

Monga has already begun integrating into Pep Guardiola’s squad and made his unofficial debut for the club as a substitute during Manchester City’s 3-1 victory over a K-League XI in Seoul, South Korea, on Wednesday.

The appearance marked another milestone in the teenager’s promising career as he continues to adapt to life at one of Europe’s biggest clubs.

Manchester City have built a reputation for nurturing young talents through their academy before introducing them into the first team, and Monga will hope to follow the path of several academy graduates who have gone on to establish themselves at the highest level.

With a long-term contract secured and his first appearance already behind him, the winger will now focus on impressing City’s coaching staff and earning further opportunities as he continues his development.
