Toby Alderweireld Urges Tottenham to Sign Super Eagles Star Victor Osimhen

Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld has urged his former club to make a move for Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen, insisting the Nigerian forward is the type of proven goalscorer Tottenham have lacked since Harry Kane’s departure to Bayern Munich in 2023.

Alderweireld believes Osimhen possesses the qualities needed to strengthen Tottenham’s attack and help the club compete more effectively in the Premier League next season. According to him, the North London side should prioritise signing an experienced striker capable of delivering goals consistently rather than taking unnecessary risks in the transfer market.

Speaking in an interview with Hajper, the Belgian defender said Tottenham have struggled to replace Kane’s influence in front of goal and described Osimhen as the ideal solution.

“Victor Osimhen is a very good striker, and Tottenham Hotspur need a very good striker. They have lacked a top player there since Harry Kane, so I think that’s an area where they have to improve,” Alderweireld said.

He added that Osimhen has consistently demonstrated his goalscoring ability wherever he has played, insisting the Napoli striker would adapt successfully to the physical demands of English football.

“Osimhen has scored everywhere he has played. He is going to get you goals, even in the Premier League. Spurs cannot gamble too much this season. That is why they are spending big money on big players because they know they need to give something back to the fans,” he stated.

Alderweireld acknowledged that several Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United, could also benefit from signing Osimhen. However, he suggested that some clubs may hesitate because the striker is no longer considered a young prospect.

He argued that football teams require a healthy balance between emerging talents and experienced professionals capable of mentoring younger players. Drawing from his time at Ajax, he recalled how senior players such as Dusan Tadic and Daley Blind helped develop rising stars like Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt.

His comments come as Tottenham continue rebuilding under manager Roberto De Zerbi, who has already strengthened the squad with the arrivals of Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Jan Paul van Hecke.

Although Dominic Solanke and Richarlison remain Tottenham’s primary attacking options, Alderweireld believes Osimhen’s proven goalscoring record would significantly improve the club’s chances of success. Any potential transfer, however, would require Tottenham to meet Napoli’s valuation and agree on a substantial financial package before the close of the transfer window.
