President Bola Tinubu has congratulated former military president, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, on his 85th birthday, describing him as an elder statesman whose leadership left enduring marks on Nigeria’s political, economic and geographic development.
President Bola Tinubu has congratulated former military president, Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (retd.), on his 85th birthday, describing him as an outstanding leader whose tenure left lasting impacts on Nigeria.
Tinubu, in a statement issued by his spokesman, Mr Bayo Onanuga, described Babangida, popularly known as IBB, as an elder statesman whose remarkable military career culminated in his leadership of the country following the 1985 coup.
The President said Babangida’s eight-year administration had left enduring marks on Nigeria’s political, economic and geographic landscape.
“Like him or not, former President Babangida impacted Nigeria in ways no other leader has. His eight-year reign left enduring marks on our political, economic, and geographic landscape,” Tinubu said.
He said Babangida expanded the nation’s economy, established infrastructure and created agencies and institutions that continued to contribute to national development.
Tinubu also credited the former military leader with foresight, wisdom and a sense of equity and fairness, saying these qualities contributed to the creation and survival of several states in the federation.
The President said Babangida’s name and legacy would remain indelible in Nigeria’s history because of his contributions to national development.
He noted that even in retirement, Babangida continued to provide counsel and guidance to the nation from his residence in Minna, Niger State.
“His advice and wise counsel remain an inspiration to younger generations,” Tinubu said.
The President wished Babangida continued good health, strength and many more years, praying that Almighty Allah would continue to preserve him.
