Some Could Not Eat, Kanu Reveals Super Falcons’ Reaction to WAFCON Exit
Uchenna Kanu says the Super Falcons were deeply affected by their WAFCON quarter-final defeat to Cameroon, revealing that some players were still unable to eat the following day as they struggled to come to terms with the loss.
Super Falcons striker Uchenna Kanu has revealed the emotional impact Nigeria’s WAFCON exit had on the team, saying some players struggled to eat the day after their quarter-final defeat to Cameroon.
Nigeria’s title defence ended after the Falcons suffered a 1–0 defeat to Cameroon in Casablanca on Sunday. The result also meant Nigeria missed out on one of Africa’s automatic qualification places for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Kanu said the mood in the camp remained sombre more than 24 hours after the defeat, with players still struggling to process the disappointment.
She explained that the team had been devastated by the result, particularly because of the importance of the tournament and the World Cup qualification opportunity attached to it.
Nigeria will now have to pursue qualification through the play-in route, rather than securing one of Africa’s automatic slots through the WAFCON.
Former Super Falcons forward Francisca Ordega has also criticised the team’s preparation for the tournament, saying Nigeria needed better planning given the World Cup qualification stakes.
