Real Madrid Welcomes FIFA’s Decision to Scrap Controversial World Cup Investment Plan
Real Madrid praised FIFA’s withdrawal of its World Cup investor proposal, calling it a victory for football and supporters.
Spanish football giants Real Madrid have welcomed FIFA’s decision to abandon its controversial proposal to allow private investment in the FIFA World Cup, describing the move as a positive outcome for football and its global supporters.
The decision follows intense opposition from several football governing bodies, led by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), which strongly criticised the proposal and threatened to boycott FIFA competitions if it proceeded.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino officially withdrew the plan after mounting pressure from UEFA and other football confederations, marking a significant reversal for the world football governing body.
In a statement released on Sunday, Real Madrid expressed satisfaction with FIFA’s decision, saying the withdrawal was in the best interest of the game.
“Our club believes this is good news for football, for its institutions and, above all, for the millions of fans of our beloved sport,” the Spanish club stated.
The club also thanked UEFA, football confederations, national federations and other sporting institutions that opposed the proposal.
“Real Madrid wishes to express its gratitude to UEFA, to the confederations and federations, and to all the institutions that firmly and responsibly opposed this project,” the statement added.
The proposal, unveiled by FIFA earlier in the week, sought to establish a commercial subsidiary responsible for managing major FIFA competitions, including the World Cup and the Club World Cup.
According to FIFA, the new company would have been open to private investment and was expected to generate about $4.2 billion, with proceeds intended to increase financial support for member associations around the world.
However, the proposal sparked widespread criticism from football stakeholders who argued that allowing private investors into the governance and commercial structure of the World Cup could undermine the integrity and independence of the sport.
UEFA emerged as the strongest opponent, accusing FIFA of making important decisions without proper consultation and warning that confidence in the current FIFA leadership had been severely damaged.
The European governing body also criticised what it described as a lack of transparency in the proposal, insisting that football’s premier competitions should remain under the control of football institutions rather than private investors.
With FIFA now abandoning the proposal, attention is expected to shift back to preparations for future international competitions and restoring unity among football’s governing bodies.
