Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has announced plans to establish an Independent Commission of Inquiry immediately after Saturday’s governorship election to investigate reported cases of extrajudicial killings and other acts of violence linked to the election period.

Adeleke disclosed this on Friday while addressing journalists in Osogbo. His speech was read by the state Commissioner for Information, Kolapo Alimi.

The governor expressed condolences to families who lost loved ones during the election-related violence, stressing that political differences should never result in the loss of lives.

He said the commission would investigate the circumstances surrounding all reported killings and violent incidents and recommend appropriate action to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice, regardless of their political affiliation, position or influence.

Adeleke also said the state government would establish a framework to support and compensate families of those who died during the violence.

He assured residents that the victims would be appropriately honoured, adding that while the election would eventually end, the people of Osun would remain united.

The governor's announcement comes amid heightened tension ahead of the August 15 governorship election, with reports of politically linked violence and alleged extrajudicial killings in the state.
