Osun Commissioner Arrested Over Gunshots at APC Rally
Osun Commissioner for Environment Mayowa Asejoorin was arrested after gunshots during an APC rally in Ilesa left four people injured, while Governor Adeleke's campaign team described the arrest as politically motivated.
The Osun State Commissioner for Environment, Mayowa Asejoorin, has been arrested by the police in connection with gunshots fired during an All Progressives Congress rally in Ilesa.
Four people were reportedly injured during the incident, including a 14-year-old boy who was hit by a stray bullet. No death was recorded, while the injured victims were taken to hospital for treatment.
The incident occurred on Saturday when APC supporters at the rally were reportedly attacked, leading to sporadic gunshots. An eyewitness alleged that security personnel accompanying some Accord Party chieftains fired at APC supporters.
Confirming the arrest, the Osun Police spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, said officers moved to the scene after receiving the report and recovered items including spent cartridges and Amotekun personnel caps. He said Asejoorin was arrested at the scene and taken to the police command for questioning as part of the investigation.
However, the Imole Campaign Council, which supports Governor Ademola Adeleke, condemned the arrest, describing it as an attempt to silence Accord leaders ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
The campaign council called on the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to intervene, alleging that Accord leaders and supporters in Ijesaland were being targeted through politically motivated arrests.
The police have not indicated that the commissioner has been charged with an offence, saying the investigation is ongoing.
