CWG: Nigeria Sets Mixed 4x400m Relay Record as Usoro Reaches Long Jump Final

Team Nigeria continued its impressive campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Friday by setting the first-ever Commonwealth Games record in the Mixed 4x400m Relay, while Ruth Usoro secured qualification for the women’s long jump final.

The Nigerian relay quartet of Edidiong Udo, Esther Joseph, Samuel Ogazi and Patience Okon-George delivered a commanding performance to win their heat in 3:14.58, becoming the first athletes to hold the Commonwealth Games record in the newly introduced event.

Nigeria crossed the finish line comfortably ahead of Australia, who finished second in 3:15.21, with the result confirming the Nigerian team as the fastest qualifiers for the final and one of the leading contenders for the gold medal.

The performance underlined Nigeria’s growing strength in relay events and added another memorable milestone to the country’s successful athletics campaign in Glasgow.

In the field events, Ruth Usoro also impressed by booking her place in the women’s long jump final with a season’s best performance.

The Nigerian athlete produced a leap of 6.77 metres, assisted by a legal wind reading of +0.6, on her opening attempt to exceed the automatic qualifying mark of 6.70 metres.

Her first jump proved enough to secure qualification without requiring additional attempts, allowing her to conserve energy ahead of the medal event.

Usoro’s qualification keeps Nigeria firmly in contention for another athletics medal as the Games approach their closing stages.

The strong performances continue an encouraging run for Team Nigeria, whose athletes have excelled across track and field events, para sports, weightlifting, boxing and basketball during the Glasgow Games.

The mixed relay team will now turn its attention to the final, where they will be aiming to convert their record-breaking heat performance into a historic gold medal.

Usoro, meanwhile, will seek to challenge for a podium finish in the long jump final after demonstrating excellent form during qualification.

With several finals still to come, Nigeria remains optimistic about increasing its medal tally and strengthening its position among the top-performing nations at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
