CWG: Nigeria Finishes 7th With 24 Medals as 2026 Commonwealth Games Concludes

Team Nigeria has concluded its campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, with a seventh-place finish on the overall medals table after winning 24 medals across four sporting events.

The Nigerian contingent secured a total of 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals, finishing as the highest-ranked African nation at the Games.

Athletics accounted for the largest share of Nigeria’s medal haul, with several athletes delivering historic performances during the competition.

Samuel Ogazi won Nigeria’s first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medal in the men’s 400 metres, while Ezekiel Nathaniel claimed another historic title in the men’s 400m hurdles. Chukwuebuka Enekwechi also made history by capturing gold in the men’s shot put.

Goodness Nwanchukwu successfully defended her Commonwealth title by winning gold in the women’s discus throw F42-44/F61-64 para event.

Nigeria also claimed several silver medals through Udodi Onwuzurike in the men’s 200 metres, Ruth Usoro in the women’s long jump and Jessica Oji in the women’s shot put.

Among the bronze medallists were world record holder Tobi Amusan, who finished third in the women’s 100m hurdles, and Kayinsola Ajayi, who claimed bronze in the men’s 100 metres.

Temitope Adeshina also etched her name into history by becoming the first Nigerian in more than seven decades to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the women’s high jump after securing bronze.

Ella Onojuvwevwo added another bronze medal in the women’s 400 metres before helping Nigeria secure a third-place finish in the mixed 4x400m relay.

The Nigerian men’s 4x100m relay team initially received silver but was later downgraded to bronze following a post-race review.

Outside athletics, Nigerian athletes competing in para-powerlifting, weightlifting and judo also contributed to the country’s impressive medal tally.

Australia finished at the top of the medals table with 171 medals, including 70 gold, while England placed second with 110 medals. Canada, India, Scotland and New Zealand completed the top six.

The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games featured about 3,000 athletes competing for 215 gold medals after the Scottish city stepped in to host the event following Victoria, Australia’s withdrawal in 2023.
