Messi Speaks on Father’s Death, Raises Doubts About Continuing Football

Lionel Messi has opened up about the death of his father, saying he has not yet fully come to terms with the loss and admitting that he now has serious doubts about continuing his football career.

The Inter Miami captain’s father died earlier this week at the age of 68.

In his first public statement following the loss, the Argentina captain shared an emotional tribute on Instagram, recalling his close relationship with his father and the role he played throughout his football career.

Messi said his father had encouraged him to compete at the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite his deteriorating health.

According to the Argentine, his father’s condition worsened shortly before the tournament, meaning he could not communicate with him in the same way after matches.

Messi said he had hoped Argentina would reach the final so his father could travel and watch him play, but that wish was ultimately not fulfilled.

He also revealed that he had wanted to win the World Cup so he could bring the trophy home and dedicate it to his father.

Reflecting on his loss, Messi said he was uncertain about how to move forward without his father, who had been involved in his football journey from childhood.

He recalled how his father regularly took him to training sessions after work and attended his matches, while his mother also supported his development whenever his father was unavailable.

Messi said his entire life had been centred around football but acknowledged that his father’s death had made him question whether he would continue playing for much longer.

The Argentina captain said his father’s influence would remain with him, particularly in how he raises his own children.

He described his father as a central figure in his life and thanked him for his sacrifices, support and love throughout his career.

Messi ended his tribute by expressing his love for his father and saying he would continue to carry his memory with him and his family.
