Jorge Messi, the father and long-time representative of Argentine football star Lionel Messi, has died at the age of 68.

Jorge died on Friday night at a medical facility in Rosario, Argentina, following a prolonged illness, according to reports from Argentine media.

He played a significant role in Lionel's early football career, particularly when the youngster required growth hormone treatment. After efforts to secure the treatment in Argentina proved unsuccessful, Jorge helped arrange Lionel's move to Barcelona at the age of 13.

Jorge later remained closely involved in his son's professional career, serving as his representative while helping guide important decisions throughout Lionel's rise to global football stardom.

His health condition became public during the 2026 World Cup, when Lionel Messi became emotional after scoring for Argentina. Messi later said his tears were linked to difficult personal circumstances.
