Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has criticised the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the freezing of an Osun State Government account, describing the action as a threat to Nigeria's democracy and an attempt to undermine opposition-controlled states.

In a statement shared on his official X account, Makinde said while no government should be exempt from scrutiny, anti-graft agencies must not be used selectively against particular states or public office holders. He warned that such actions erode public confidence in federal institutions and weaken democratic governance.

The governor argued that freezing an official state government account without due legal process exceeded the powers of the EFCC, insisting that the rule of law must guide every action taken by public institutions. He also suggested that the timing of the action raised concerns because it comes ahead of the Osun State governorship election.

Makinde called on federal institutions to remain politically neutral and discharge their constitutional responsibilities with fairness and professionalism. He also urged Nigerians, civil society organisations, the international community to remain vigilant in defending democratic values and the independence of public institutions.

The governor maintained that democracy cannot thrive where government institutions are perceived as instruments of political intimidation, stressing that protecting the credibility and independence of public agencies is essential to preserving public trust and strengthening Nigeria's democratic system.
