Liverpool Teammates Jones, Szoboszlai in Heated Exchange After Pre-Season Win
Curtis Jones and Dominik Szoboszlai clash after Liverpool’s pre-season victory over Wrexham in New York.
Liverpool midfielders Curtis Jones and Dominik Szoboszlai were involved in a tense confrontation after the Reds’ 1-0 pre-season victory over Wrexham at Yankee Stadium in New York.
The incident occurred shortly after the final whistle as Liverpool players walked around the pitch to acknowledge supporters following the match.
Jones and Szoboszlai were seen engaged in what appeared to be a heated discussion before defender Kostas Tsimikas joined the exchange.
Although the exact cause of the disagreement has not been confirmed, reports suggest it may have been linked to the handling of Liverpool’s captain’s armband during the game.
Szoboszlai, who started the match as captain, was substituted during the encounter and reportedly handed the armband to Tsimikas instead of Jones.
Footage from the aftermath showed Tsimikas later throwing the armband onto the pitch during the exchange between the players, further fuelling speculation about the source of the disagreement.
Neither Liverpool nor the players involved have publicly commented on the incident.
The confrontation comes at a time when Jones’ future at Anfield continues to attract attention.
The midfielder has entered the final year of his current contract, prompting interest from several clubs during the summer transfer window.
Liverpool recently rejected a reported £21.7 million offer from Italian giants Inter Milan for the 25-year-old, signalling the club’s desire to retain his services.
New Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has also expressed his admiration for Jones and made it clear that he hopes the midfielder remains part of his plans.
“I rate Curtis very highly,” Iraola said.
“For me, he is a great, great player, and I hope he can continue with us and continue performing the way he has been performing.”
Liverpool are currently continuing preparations for the new season during their pre-season tour of North America.
The victory over Wrexham formed part of the club’s build-up to the upcoming campaign, with several senior players receiving valuable minutes as the coaching staff assesses the squad.
The Reds will conclude their North American tour with another pre-season fixture against Leeds United in Chicago on Sunday.
The match is expected to provide Iraola with another opportunity to fine-tune his squad before the start of the new Premier League season, while attention will also remain on the relationship between Jones and Szoboszlai following their on-field disagreement.
