Lampard Targets Chelsea Winger Mudryk for Coventry Loan Move After Doping Case Resolution

Coventry City manager Frank Lampard is reportedly preparing a surprise move to sign Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk on loan following the resolution of the Ukrainian international’s anti-doping case.

According to reports, Lampard wants to strengthen Coventry’s attacking options as the club prepares for life in the Premier League and believes Mudryk could play a key role in his plans for the new season.

The move would reunite Lampard with the 25-year-old, having previously worked with him during his second spell as Chelsea manager. During that period, Mudryk made eight appearances under the former England midfielder.

Reports indicate that Lampard is hoping his relationship with Chelsea could help facilitate a temporary switch to Coventry, although the Championship club is expected to face stiff competition for the winger’s signature.

In addition to Coventry’s interest, two unnamed Premier League clubs and three European teams are also believed to be monitoring Mudryk’s availability.

Mudryk joined Chelsea from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023 in a deal worth up to £89 million, including performance-related add-ons. Despite arriving with high expectations, the winger struggled to establish himself consistently in the first team.

His career was further disrupted after he was provisionally suspended in November 2024 following a positive test for the banned substance meldonium.

The disciplinary process has now concluded after Mudryk accepted responsibility for an anti-doping rule violation and agreed to a suspension equivalent to the period he had already served, making him eligible to return to competitive football.

Speaking after the conclusion of the case, the Ukrainian described the experience as the most difficult period of his professional career.

“This has been the most difficult period of my career,” Mudryk said.

“As I have always maintained from the outset of this case, I have never knowingly or intentionally taken any banned substance.”

His return now opens the door to a fresh chapter, with several clubs reportedly exploring opportunities to secure his services ahead of the new campaign.

For Lampard, signing Mudryk would represent a significant statement of intent as Coventry seek to strengthen their squad, while the winger would have the opportunity to rebuild his confidence and revive a career interrupted by suspension and inconsistent form.
