IGP Warns Against Jungle Justice, Vows Full Prosecution of Offenders

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, has warned Nigerians against jungle justice and mob violence, declaring that anyone involved in the lynching or killing of criminal suspects will be prosecuted under the law.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Disu stressed that only the courts have the authority to determine whether a suspect is guilty and impose punishment.

He urged citizens to hand over suspected criminals to the police or other security agencies rather than take the law into their own hands.

The IGP described jungle justice as a criminal act rather than a form of justice, stressing that Nigeria operates under the rule of law and not mob rule.

He said no individual, group or community has the legal authority to arrest, try, sentence or execute another person based solely on allegations.

Citing Sections 33, 34 and 36 of the 1999 Constitution, Disu noted that every Nigerian, including suspects, is entitled to the rights to life, dignity and fair hearing.

He emphasised that suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty by a competent court and cannot be convicted based on street accusations, public sentiment or viral videos.

The IGP expressed concern over cases in which innocent people have been killed because of unfounded allegations. He referenced incidents involving students accused of stealing phones, travellers mistaken for criminals and individuals attacked over rumours of blasphemy or ritual killings.

Disu specifically recalled the killing of 16 travellers in Uromi, Edo State, in March 2025, describing the incident as a serious warning about the dangers of mob justice.

He reiterated that rumours, accusations shouted by a crowd or videos circulating on social media do not constitute sufficient evidence to justify taking another person’s life.

The police chief also warned that criminal liability for mob killings extends beyond the person who directly inflicts the fatal injury.

According to him, anyone who incites, plans, supports or encourages a mob attack can be prosecuted even if they did not personally participate in the killing.

He added that people who cheer attackers, record and circulate videos of mob attacks, mobilise crowds or obstruct security personnel attempting to rescue victims could also face criminal charges, including conspiracy to commit murder.

Disu urged Nigerians to cooperate with security agencies and allow the justice system to handle allegations of criminal conduct, stressing that respect for due process remains essential to protecting lives and maintaining law and order.
