Hamas has said it remains ready to proceed with a US-backed peace plan for Gaza, urging the United States to pressure Israel to implement the agreement.

A Hamas official told AFP that the group, along with other Palestinian factions, had informed mediators of its readiness to begin implementing the agreement, move to its second phase, provided Israel approves the plan, begins fulfilling its commitments.

Under the proposed second phase, Hamas would hand over its weapons to an emerging Palestinian governing committee in Gaza. The plan also envisages a phased Israeli withdrawal from parts of the territory following Hamas' disarmament.

However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said Israel did not agree to the latest draft presented by the US-backed Board of Peace. Israel has maintained that its forces will only withdraw after Hamas is fully disarmed.

Hamas has therefore called on Washington to exert pressure on Israel to abide by the agreement, saying implementation of the next phase depends on both sides fulfilling their obligations.

The disagreement leaves the proposed peace process facing uncertainty, despite Hamas' renewed expression of readiness to proceed.
