Gombe Varsity ASUU Suspends Strike, Gives Govt October Deadline
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Gombe State University branch, has suspended its planned total, indefinite strike, giving the state government and university management until October 2026 to implement agreements on a new salary scale and outstanding staff entitlements.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Gombe State University branch, has suspended its planned total and indefinite strike, giving the state government and university management until October 2026 to fulfil agreements reached with the union.
The decision was contained in a resolution issued after the union’s congress meeting on Friday, Aug. 21, and signed by the branch Chairperson, Mustapha Muhammad, and Secretary, Aliyu Shelleng.
The union said the congress considered a letter from the Gombe State Government on the implementation of the new salary scale for academic staff, as well as a Memorandum of Understanding with the university management on the payment of outstanding arrears owed to members.
Following deliberations, the congress resolved to suspend the planned industrial action to give the government and university management an opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to the agreements.
The union, however, said the suspension was conditional on the implementation of the commitments by the end of October.
It warned that failure to fulfil the agreements within the stipulated period would lead to the commencement of the planned strike.
The development temporarily averts an industrial action that could have disrupted academic activities at Gombe State University.
