Fubara Loyalist Says He Joined Wike Camp to Support Governor's Peace Efforts

A former staunch supporter of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Chijioke Ihunwo, has explained his decision to work with the Rainbow Coalition aligned with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, saying he was following the governor's directive to embrace peace in the state.

Ihunwo, a former caretaker chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, said his loyalty to Fubara remained unchanged despite the political realignment. He maintained that supporting the governor meant following his decision to sheathe political swords, move forward.

He dismissed claims that he, other allies gave Fubara bad political advice that contributed to the crisis with Wike, saying he had a personal relationship with the governor, had acted according to his convictions at the time.

The former Rivers youth leader said the current realignment should not be viewed as a victory or defeat for any political camp, arguing that the priority should be restoring peace, unity in the state.

Ihunwo said he would now work with Wike's supporters in Obio/Akpor ahead of the 2027 general elections, following Fubara's instruction to ensure the Rainbow Coalition succeeds in Rivers State. He added that political differences would be resolved among those involved.

He also rejected claims that his decision amounted to betrayal, saying his loyalty remained with Governor Fubara, adding that he was not interested in seeking an elective position independently because that could create another crisis for his principal.
