Five transmission towers along the Ikot Abasi–Eket 132kV Double Circuit Transmission Line have collapsed following extensive vandalism of the facilities, the Transmission Company of Nigeria has said.

The damage was discovered on August 9, 2026, during a routine joint patrol by TCN linesmen along the transmission corridor.

According to TCN, a preliminary assessment showed that critical structural bracing members had been removed from several towers, causing five towers to collapse.

Further inspection revealed that structural components had also been removed and stolen from seven other towers along the route, leaving them vulnerable to further collapse.

TCN said the damage posed a serious threat to the reliability of electricity supply in the affected corridor. To reduce the impact, the company reconfigured the network to prioritise electricity supply from Ibom Power.

The transmission company said it was mobilising an urgent intervention to reconstruct the damaged sections and restore the integrity of the line.

TCN added that security agencies had been notified to investigate the incident and prevent further attacks on transmission infrastructure.

The company condemned the vandalism as an act of sabotage, urging communities and other stakeholders along transmission corridors to help protect critical electricity infrastructure from theft and destruction.
