FG asks IATA to change Osubi Airport code
The Federal Government has asked the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to change the three-letter code assigned to Osubi Airport in Delta State, as part of efforts to reposition the airport and improve its international recognition.
The Federal Government has asked the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to review and change the three-letter code assigned to Osubi Airport in Delta State.
The request was made by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo, as the government intensifies efforts to reposition the airport and strengthen aviation infrastructure across the country.
Osubi Airport, located near Warri, serves as an important aviation gateway to Delta State and the wider Niger Delta region.
The minister said changing the airport’s code would help address challenges associated with its existing designation and give the facility a more appropriate identity within the international aviation system.
The development forms part of broader Federal Government efforts to improve the operational efficiency, visibility and competitiveness of Nigerian airports.
The government has also been implementing measures aimed at improving passenger experience, aviation safety and airport infrastructure nationwide.
The IATA airport code is a three-letter identifier used internationally to identify airports and is commonly displayed on passenger tickets, baggage tags and flight information systems.
The Federal Government is expected to engage relevant aviation authorities and stakeholders to facilitate the proposed change and ensure that the process is carried out in line with international aviation standards.
The move comes amid renewed efforts by the government to strengthen regional aviation connectivity and ensure that airports outside the major aviation hubs are better positioned to support economic activities.
Further details on the proposed replacement code and the timeline for its implementation are expected to be announced following consultations with IATA and other relevant stakeholders.
