Falcons Coach Explains Oshoala’s Substitution

Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu has dismissed concerns over Asisat Oshoala’s early substitution during Nigeria’s emphatic 6-2 victory over Egypt at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, explaining that the decision was purely tactical rather than injury-related.

Oshoala, a six-time CAF Women’s Player of the Year, was withdrawn shortly before half-time despite opening the scoring from the penalty spot in the 21st minute after winning the spot-kick herself. The goal took her tally at the tournament to two, following her decisive strike in Nigeria’s 1-0 victory over Zambia during the group stage.

Speaking after the match, Madugu said the coaching crew noticed a slight drop in the striker’s intensity and decided to make an adjustment to maintain the team’s aggressive attacking approach.

“Actually, it was not much of an injury, but we felt the energy level was dropping a little,” Madugu explained.

“We planned to play with a high intensity, and we felt the energy level had dropped a little, allowing the Egyptians to settle at the back. We didn’t want them to settle so much at the back, and it was not really working the way we had expected. That forced the change that we made.”

The substitution proved effective as Nigeria continued to dominate proceedings, scoring freely to record one of the biggest victories of the tournament and book a place in the quarter-finals.

Oshoala remains one of Nigeria’s most decorated players, having won four WAFCON titles with the Super Falcons in 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2024. Since making her senior debut in 2014, she has scored at every WAFCON she has featured in except the 2022 edition in Morocco, where an injury suffered in the opening match against South Africa ruled her out of the remainder of the competition. South Africa eventually lifted the trophy that year.

Now 31, the Al-Hilal forward is expected to play a crucial role as Nigeria pursue a record-extending 11th continental title.

Earlier in the tournament, Oshoala appealed for nationwide support, reminding Nigerians that qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup is also at stake.

Following the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the global tournament, she stressed that the women’s team understood the expectations of the country and remained determined to deliver success.

The experienced striker is expected to return to action on Sunday when Nigeria take on Cameroon in a high-stakes quarter-final in Casablanca. Victory would secure a place in the semi-finals and automatically qualify the Super Falcons for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
