The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested a man for allegedly impersonating a DSS operative and using a fake firearm to extort commuters and motorists in Abuja.
The suspect, identified as Moferewa Maiye, was arrested late on Wednesday by DSS operatives at his hideout around NITEL Junction, along Adetokunbo Ademola Way, Wuse II, following credible intelligence.
The DSS said Maiye was wearing a DSS tactical uniform and had a fake pistol in his possession when he was arrested.
According to a security source, the suspect allegedly used the uniform and toy gun to intimidate commuters and motorists and extort money from them.
The suspect reportedly told investigators that his late brother, Monday Maiye, had been a DSS operative and that the uniform and other items found in his possession belonged to him.
The DSS is investigating the claim and trying to establish how long the suspect may have been involved in similar acts of impersonation and extortion.
Maiye remains in DSS custody and is being interrogated, while investigators are also probing how he obtained the Service’s uniform and other tactical equipment.
The DSS warned that the arrest underscored its concern over individuals who impersonate security personnel to intimidate members of the public and commit criminal activities.
The Service said investigations would continue to determine the full extent of the suspect’s activities and establish whether other individuals were involved.
