Dangote Refinery Ramps Up to 700,000 Barrels Per Day, Strengthening Africa’s Energy Landscape
Dangote Refinery increases output to 700,000 bpd, surpassing capacity and strengthening Nigeria’s energy sector. Expansion plans target 1.4 million bpd, boosting exports, industrial growth, and regional fuel supply dominance.
Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals has increased its crude oil processing capacity to 700,000 barrels per day (bpd) following a performance test conducted by Process Licensors, marking a major milestone in its operational expansion and reinforcing its status as the world’s largest single-train refinery.
The upgrade pushes the facility beyond its original nameplate capacity of 650,000 bpd, highlighting improved engineering performance, operational efficiency, and the refinery’s ability to handle additional feedstock across its production units without compromising output quality.
Vice President for Oil and Gas at Dangote Industries Limited, Devakumar Edwin, said the ramp-up forms part of a broader expansion strategy aimed at more than doubling capacity to 1.4 million bpd within 30 months, a move that could position the refinery as the largest globally.
He noted that the expansion is designed to boost Nigeria’s energy self-sufficiency, reduce dependence on imported refined petroleum products, and strengthen the country’s role as a regional export hub, while also expanding its influence across global energy markets.
Owned by Nigerian industrialist Aliko Dangote, the refinery began fuel production in 2024 and has steadily increased output of petrol, diesel, aviation fuel, and other refined products. It has already become a key supplier to domestic and international markets, exporting to several African countries as well as destinations in Europe, including the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands, while also supplying gasoline to the United States and jet fuel to Saudi Arabia.
The refinery has also been credited with stabilizing fuel supply in Nigeria and reducing reliance on imports, easing pressure on foreign exchange reserves amid ongoing global energy disruptions.
In April, Dangote Petroleum Refinery was reported by S&P Global Commodities to be the world’s largest exporter of jet fuel, further strengthening its position in global energy trade.
Looking ahead, the refinery’s expansion plans are expected to generate significant economic benefits, including job creation, industrial growth, and improved trade balances, while also supporting downstream industries through consistent supply of LPG, polypropylene, and future production of Linear Alkylbenzene (LAB) used in detergent manufacturing.
