CWG: Team Nigeria Eyes More Medals as Athletics, Weightlifting Take Centre Stage

Team Nigeria will continue its quest for more medals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow as attention shifts to crucial athletics and weightlifting events scheduled over the coming days.

With the country’s medal tally continuing to grow, Nigerian athletes are expected to compete across several disciplines, raising hopes of additional podium finishes.

In athletics, Nigeria has a strong presence in the men’s and women’s 400 metres after five quarter-milers secured places in the semi-finals.

Samuel Ogazi and Ella Onojuvwevwo qualified automatically based on their world rankings, while Patience Okon-George, Esther Joseph and Eddidiong Udo progressed from the qualifying heats.

Ogazi remains one of Nigeria’s leading medal contenders in the men’s event, while Onojuvwevwo will spearhead the country’s challenge in the women’s race.

National long jump champion Prestina Ochonogor is also expected to compete after being cleared to participate in the women’s long jump following an earlier eligibility dispute.

The teenager will be aiming to continue Nigeria’s proud tradition in the event after the withdrawal of reigning Commonwealth champion Ese Brume.

Nigeria has already recorded encouraging performances in the athletics programme, with Kayinsola Ajayi claiming bronze in the men’s 100 metres to boost the country’s medal tally.

Attention will also focus on the weightlifting arena, where Nigerian lifters have consistently delivered impressive performances at major international competitions.

Following the country’s success in previous weightlifting events, expectations remain high that more medals could be added as competition intensifies.

Officials are optimistic that the combination of experienced athletes and emerging talents will strengthen Nigeria’s overall performance before the Games conclude.

Team Nigeria’s coaching crew has expressed confidence in the athletes’ preparations, insisting they remain focused on delivering strong performances across all remaining events.

With several finals still ahead in athletics and weightlifting, Nigeria has realistic hopes of improving its position on the medals table and ending the Games with one of its strongest performances in recent editions.

Supporters will now be looking forward to more medal-winning displays as Team Nigeria continues its campaign in Glasgow.
