CWG: Nigeria’s Men’s 4x100m Relay Medal Downgraded to Bronze After Canada Wins Appeal

Team Nigeria’s men’s 4x100 metres relay medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games has been downgraded from silver to bronze after Canada successfully appealed its disqualification for an alleged lane infringement.

The Nigerian quartet of Favour Ashe, Kayinsola Ajayi, Nicholas Fakorede and Udodi Onwuzurike had originally been elevated to second place after Canada, which crossed the finish line ahead of them, was disqualified by race officials.

Canada finished the race in 38.11 seconds, behind only Australia, who claimed the gold medal. The Canadian athletes were celebrating their silver medal performance in the mixed zone before officials announced their disqualification over an alleged lane violation.

However, the Canadians immediately lodged an appeal against the decision. The protest delayed the medal presentation as race officials reviewed the incident.

Following the review, the appeal was upheld, and Canada’s second-place finish was reinstated. As a result, Nigeria’s relay team dropped to third place and officially received the bronze medal.

The updated result has since been reflected on the official Commonwealth Games website.

Despite the setback, Team Nigeria has continued to enjoy an impressive campaign at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, collecting 23 medals comprising 10 gold, six silver and seven bronze medals.

Athletics remained Nigeria’s strongest event, delivering the highest number of medals during the competition.

Samuel Ogazi made history by winning Nigeria’s first Commonwealth Games gold medal in the men’s 400 metres, while Ezekiel Nathaniel secured another historic title in the men’s 400m hurdles. Chukwuebuka Enekwechi also captured Nigeria’s first Commonwealth Games gold medal in the men’s shot put.

Goodness Nwanchukwu successfully defended her women’s discus throw F42-44/F61-64 title with another outstanding performance.

Nigeria also claimed silver medals through Udodi Onwuzurike in the men’s 200 metres, Ruth Usoro in the women’s long jump and Jessica Oji in the women’s shot put.

Bronze medals were won by Tobi Amusan in the women’s 100m hurdles, Kayinsola Ajayi in the men’s 100m, Temitope Adeshina in the women’s high jump, and Ella Onojuvwevwo in the women’s 400m.

Onojuvwevwo also helped Nigeria secure another bronze medal in the mixed 4x400m relay, adding to the country’s overall medal haul at the Games.
