CWG: Amusan Blames Injury for Shock Women’s 100m Hurdles Bronze

World record holder Tobi Amusan has attributed her disappointing bronze medal finish in the women’s 100m hurdles at the 2026 Commonwealth Games to a knee injury sustained before the competition.

The Nigerian hurdler made the disclosure while speaking with journalists after Thursday’s final at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow, Scotland.

Amusan entered the race as the overwhelming favourite to retain her Commonwealth title and become the first woman to win three consecutive gold medals in the event. However, she finished third in 12.60 seconds behind Devynne Charlton of the Bahamas, who won gold, and Jamaica’s Megan Simmonds, who claimed silver.

The 29-year-old looked far from her best during the final despite comfortably winning her semi-final earlier in the competition.

Reflecting on her performance, Amusan explained that cold weather conditions and an injury suffered during her training camp affected her ability to compete at her usual level.

“It was a little bit cold out there, and I tend to stay warm at every opportunity I get. So I had to do my best to make sure I kept myself warm out there,” she said.

She disclosed that she suffered a serious fall before arriving in Glasgow and had been managing the injury throughout the competition.

“I really had a pretty bad fall at the training camp. So, I’ve been really iffy about my knee coming into this track meet. But I’ve just been thankful that God kept it together for me to be able to get onto the podium here once again,” Amusan said.

Despite missing out on a historic third straight Commonwealth title, the Nigerian star expressed gratitude for finishing on the podium and remaining competitive despite her physical condition.

Amusan added that her immediate priority is recovering from the injury before deciding on her next competitions.

“Honestly, with what I’m dealing with right now I just want to get treatment and we’ll see,” she said.

Her bronze medal contributed to Team Nigeria’s growing medal haul at the Glasgow Games.

Nigeria has enjoyed another strong outing at the Commonwealth Games, collecting medals across athletics, para sports, weightlifting, boxing and basketball.

Although Amusan’s title defence ended in disappointment, she remains one of Nigeria’s most accomplished athletes and is expected to return to competition after completing treatment and rehabilitation.
