CWG 2026: ‘I Feel on Top of the World’ — Nwachukwu Reacts After Record-Breaking Commonwealth Gold

Nigeria’s Goodness Nwachukwu says she feels “on top of the world” after producing a world record-breaking throw to successfully defend her Commonwealth Games women’s discus title in Glasgow.

The Nigerian para-athlete retained her crown with a sensational final throw of 39.66 metres in the women’s F42-44/F61-64 discus event, breaking her own F42 world record by more than three metres and securing Nigeria’s seventh gold medal of the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Speaking after the competition, an emotional Nwachukwu described the achievement as one of the biggest moments of her career.

“I feel like I am on top of the world. I feel so great,” she said.

“I was just shouting.”

She also thanked her supporters in Nigeria for their encouragement throughout her journey.

“I love you all and I can’t wait to see you. Love you,” she added.

Nwachukwu admitted that the competition did not begin as planned despite an excellent warm-up session before the event.

According to her, she struggled with her opening throws and briefly questioned why she could not reproduce her training form during the competition.

“I was wondering what was happening because my warm-up was so good,” she said.

She explained that her coach continued encouraging her to remain calm, while another competitor from Kenya also offered words of support that helped restore her confidence.

“My coach kept telling me to calm down, and even one of the athletes from Kenya encouraged me to relax,” she recalled.

The reigning Commonwealth champion said the decisive moment came just before her final attempt when her coach urged her to attack the throw with confidence.

“Before the last throw, my coach said, ‘Now you can explode. Attack.’ That was when the record came,” she said.

Her winning effort not only secured another Commonwealth Games gold medal but also reinforced her position as one of the world’s leading para-athletes.

The 27-year-old first captured international attention at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, where she also broke the world record before winning the gold medal.

Her latest performance in Glasgow extended her dominance in the event and added another memorable chapter to Nigeria’s successful campaign at the Games.

Nwachukwu’s triumph further strengthened Team Nigeria’s medal haul while highlighting the country’s growing influence in para-sports on the international stage.
