CWG 2026: Amusan Settles for Bronze as Charlton Wins Women’s 100m Hurdles Gold

Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan missed out on a historic third consecutive Commonwealth Games women’s 100m hurdles title after finishing with the bronze medal at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on Thursday.

The world record holder crossed the finish line in 12.60 seconds at Scotstoun Stadium, surrendering the title she successfully defended in Birmingham four years ago.

Amusan made a strong start from the blocks but struggled to maintain her rhythm after the opening hurdles, allowing her rivals to pull away early in the race.

Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton produced a commanding performance to claim the gold medal in 12.33 seconds, while Jamaica’s Megan Simmonds finished second to secure the silver medal.

The Nigerian sprint hurdler was unable to recover the gap despite a late surge, settling for third place and her first Commonwealth Games defeat since making her debut in Gold Coast, Australia, in 2018.

Amusan had entered the final hoping to become the first woman in Commonwealth Games history to win three consecutive gold medals in the event after her victories in 2018 and 2022.

Her bronze-medal finish ended an unbeaten Commonwealth Games run that had lasted for eight years.

Charlton’s victory also reversed the outcome of the 2022 Commonwealth Games final, where Amusan defeated the Bahamian to win the gold medal.

Despite missing out on the title, Amusan’s bronze contributed to Nigeria’s growing medal tally at the Games.

Earlier in the evening, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi made history by winning Nigeria’s first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medal in the men’s shot put event.

His triumph gave Team Nigeria another major boost in athletics before Amusan’s podium finish.

With the latest results, Team Nigeria’s medal haul at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games increased to 16 medals.

The country has now won eight gold, five silver and three bronze medals across different events, maintaining a strong presence on the medals table.

Amusan remains one of Nigeria’s most accomplished athletes, having previously set the women’s 100m hurdles world record and claimed multiple continental and international titles.

Although she fell short of making Commonwealth Games history, her latest podium finish added another medal to her impressive international career and kept Nigeria among the leading nations in athletics at the Glasgow Games.
