CWG: Nigeria Ranks Ninth on All-Time Medals Table

Nigeria has maintained its place among the most successful nations in Commonwealth Games history, ranking ninth on the all-time medals table as the 2026 edition in Glasgow enters its closing stages.

Since making its debut at the multi-sport event, Team Nigeria has won a total of 271 medals, comprising 82 gold, 84 silver and 105 bronze medals. The achievement places the country among only nine nations to have surpassed the 250-medal mark in Commonwealth Games history.

Australia remains the most successful nation, with an incredible 2,604 medals, including 1,003 gold medals. England occupies second place with 2,322 medals, while Canada sits third after collecting 1,647 medals.

New Zealand ranks fourth with 706 medals, followed by India on 564. Scotland occupies sixth position with 502 medals, while South Africa and Wales are seventh and eighth with 416 and 334 medals respectively.

Nigeria is the highest-ranked country in West Africa and one of only two African nations in the top 10. Kenya completes the top 10 with 258 medals, including an impressive 91 gold medals.

The historical rankings reflect decades of consistent participation by the leading Commonwealth sporting nations, particularly Australia and England, whose combined total of 4,926 medals accounts for more than half of the medals won by the top 10 countries.

Despite the rich history of the Games, several Commonwealth nations are still searching for their first medal.

A total of 16 Commonwealth Games Associations have never reached the podium. They include Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Belize, Brunei, Eswatini, the Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Maldives, Montserrat, Saint Helena, Sierra Leone and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Also on the list are Gabon and Togo, both making their Commonwealth Games debut in Glasgow after joining the Commonwealth in 2022, as well as Rwanda and Tuvalu.

With medal events still taking place before the Games conclude on August 2, some of these nations could still secure their first-ever Commonwealth medal.

Meanwhile, Team Nigeria continues to enjoy another impressive outing in Glasgow and will be aiming to improve both its medal tally and overall position before the curtain falls on the 23rd Commonwealth Games.
