Chelsea Complete £34m Signing of Argentina International Valentin Barco from Strasbourg

Chelsea have completed the signing of Argentina international Valentin Barco from French club Strasbourg in a deal reportedly worth €40 million (£34 million).

The Premier League club confirmed that the 22-year-old completed his move on Sunday after signing a seven-year contract that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2033.

Barco becomes Chelsea’s seventh signing of the summer transfer window as new manager Xabi Alonso continues strengthening his squad ahead of the new campaign.

He is also the second player to join Chelsea from Strasbourg this summer after Emmanuel Emegha, further highlighting the close relationship between the two clubs, which operate under the same ownership group.

The transfer marks the 13th player movement between Chelsea and Strasbourg since the beginning of last season.

Barco arrives in west London after an impressive spell in Ligue 1, where he established himself as one of Strasbourg’s standout performers. Known for his versatility, the Argentine is capable of playing as a left-back, wing-back or central midfielder, offering tactical flexibility to his new manager.

The Argentine initially joined Strasbourg on loan from Brighton in 2024 before the French side made the transfer permanent the following year following his consistent performances.

During his time at Strasbourg, Barco scored three goals and provided 11 assists in 58 appearances across all competitions, helping the club secure qualification for the UEFA Conference League.

Before moving to France, Barco spent a brief period in the Premier League with Brighton but struggled to establish himself as a regular in the first team.

His reputation grew significantly during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he was part of the Argentina squad that progressed to the tournament final, further enhancing his profile on the international stage.

Chelsea believe the defender-midfielder possesses the technical quality, creativity and adaptability required to fit into Alonso’s tactical approach as the club seeks to compete for domestic and European honours.

The signing continues Chelsea’s policy of recruiting young, highly rated players on long-term contracts as part of the club’s ongoing rebuilding process.

Barco is expected to join his new teammates immediately for pre-season preparations and will compete for a place in the starting lineup ahead of Chelsea’s opening fixtures of the 2026/27 season.
