Canada has introduced temporary immigration measures to support foreign workers, international students and visitors whose immigration status or documents have been affected by natural disasters in the country.

The measures are intended for temporary residents who are directly affected by disasters such as wildfires, floods, storms, hurricanes and earthquakes.

Under the policy, eligible people can receive additional time to restore or extend their immigration status where a disaster has disrupted their ability to meet normal immigration requirements. The measures also make it easier to replace immigration documents that were lost or damaged during a disaster.

The government said affected temporary residents may receive relief from certain application fees and benefit from extended deadlines, helping them maintain or regain lawful status while recovering from the disaster.

The measures took effect on April 1, 2026, and are scheduled to remain available until November 30, 2028.

The initiative reflects Canada's efforts to account for the disruption that major natural disasters can cause to people's employment, education, housing and immigration documentation.
