Arsenal have completed the signing of Brazil international midfielder Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United on a long-term contract.

The Premier League club announced the transfer on Saturday, confirming the arrival of the 28-year-old after four-and-a-half seasons at Newcastle.

Guimaraes made nearly 200 appearances for Newcastle and played a key role in the club’s Carabao Cup triumph in 2025. He also helped the club secure UEFA Champions League qualification in two seasons.

The transfer ends weeks of speculation over the midfielder’s future, with Guimaraes now set to begin a new chapter at the Emirates Stadium.

Guimaraes began his professional career with Sao Paulo-based Audax in 2015 before joining Athletico Paranaense two years later. During his time with the Brazilian club, he won four major trophies.

He moved to French side Lyon in January 2020 and spent two seasons in Ligue 1 before Newcastle signed him in January 2022.

At Newcastle, the midfielder quickly established himself as an important player in the Premier League. His ability to operate both as a defensive midfielder and in a box-to-box role has made him one of the more versatile midfielders in the league.

At international level, Guimaraes has made 48 appearances for Brazil. He was part of the Brazilian squad at the recent FIFA World Cup and has also represented the country at the Copa America.

He won a gold medal with Brazil at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta said Guimaraes would strengthen the club’s midfield while providing additional leadership and competition within the squad.

“With Bruno joining us, we are further strengthening the heart of our team. As we have all seen, Bruno can play as a defensive midfielder and as a box-to-box player,” Berta said.

He added that the midfielder combines technical quality with physical work rate and has consistently contributed goals and assists.

According to Berta, Guimaraes’ arrival would give manager Mikel Arteta more options as Arsenal continue to develop their style of play.

The signing also increases competition for places in Arsenal’s midfield as the club prepares for another demanding Premier League and European campaign.

Guimaraes will wear the number 39 shirt and join his new teammates immediately. Arsenal said the transfer remains subject to the completion of the necessary regulatory processes.
